Education & Community

How can we be sure that we are raising our children to face the challenges and grasp the opportunities of a globalised future?
Globalisation has become something of a dirty word in recent years. A cudgel that the rich nations use to impose their point of view on the developing nations of this world. The idea behind it was to create wealth for all, but some critics would say that it has only deepened the divide between rich and poor, between ‘us’ and ‘them’.
But, whether we like it or not, globalisation is here to stay. We cannot shelter from it even if we never leave Britain. Like most of the Western world, the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society. In fact, it is estimated that at least 12 British towns will have no single ethnic group in a majority within the next 30 years.

I will be partnering with other coaches, trainers and consultants to set up a project to turn kids into global citizens, as part of the government’s key education initiative ‘Every Child Matters’. This will be about much more than ‘diversity’ or ‘ecology’ training. This is about large-scale transformation of mindsets within schools and the community.
Children will develop the inner resources to deal with different, even conflicting points of view, and have meaningful conversations even when they do not agree with people. Above all, they will have the confidence and resilience to affirm their own values and beliefs, while still respecting alternative points of view.
